Obituary For Neva Louise Knisely, US Navy

Neva Louise Knisely, 74, of Brooksville, FL, died in the company of family on February 28, 2024. She was born in Elmira, NY in 1949, to Ernest and Adelaide Kelley. Neva graduated from Horseheads High School in 1967. She then worked as a water safety instructor at the YWCA before joining the Navy as a cook in May 1980. While in the Navy, Neva was deployed to Key West, FL where she met her husband Gary; and Keflavik, Iceland. After the birth of her son Garry, Neva enlisted in the Army National Guard in November 1989, where she served as a cook for 32 years. She served during Operation Ice Storm, traveled to Panama and Honduras, and provided aid during two floods in New York State. Neva’s last deployment before retiring was to Ground Zero just after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Outside of the military, Neva worked as a deli clerk at Jubilee Foods for 22 years. After the death of her husband Gary in 2020, Neva moved to Brooksville, FL to be near her son, Garry. In Brooksville, Neva made a multitude of friends in the Brookridge Community, Christ Lutheran Church, and the American Legion Post 186, 418. Neva was someone who knew everyone and remembered every detail about their lives. She was a friendly face, always willing to lend a hand where she could. She was every inch a patriot and donated to various organizations supporting veterans, children, and the environment. She was very proud of her service to America. Neva was also very fond of animals and had many beloved pets over her lifetime. She especially loved guinea pigs and always had at least one in her home. Neva will always be remembered as a kind, giving, and social person. She loved riding her motorcycle, especially with the American Legion Riders Club. Neva went on many adventures throughout her life, taking her across the globe and making friends along the way. She touched so many lives in her time with us. Neva was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Gary; her father, Ernest; her mother Adelaide; and her sister, Lisa Kinne. She is survived by her son, Garry and his wife, Amy; her siblings, Stephen Kelley and his wife, Diane; Michael Kelley and his wife, Mary; Michelle Nigro and her husband, Larry; and a plethora of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
